Drokpas – The Eccentric Tribe of Ladakh
The tough terrains of Ladakh dazzlebecause of this vivacious tribe.
Drokpa tribe are said to be one of oldest, and original, tribes of India,
Their colourful jewellery and heavy clothes make them look different
from the rest of Kashmiris. Drokpas mostly live in the disputed territorybetween India and Pakistan – theonly fertile valley of Ladakh. They
are modern in many aspects, and
extra marital affairs are considered normal in them.

Drokpas are an indigenous tribe of Dha-Hanu valley of
Ladakh, which is a disputed territory between India & Pakistan.
British explorer, Godfrey Thomas Vigne, propounded the theory that
they are either remanents of the Alexander’s Greek army or the
original Aryan race from which all the Indo-European people
descended. Drokpas don’t share or follow societal norms.
Public
displays of affection and the concept of wife swapping are normal
and encouraged in their community.
The main item of clothing in their wardrobe is woolen dresses for
men & women, but in case of men the dress is held at the waist
by woolen trousers, Women also wear goatskin capes & adorn
themselves with shells, beads & silver jewellery. Both men and
women wear colorful headgears called ‘Tepi’ with flowers, metal trinkets & peacock feathers attached to them.
This was a group project where we were asked to contemporarize
the traditional elements of an indigenous tribe from India.
A couple
of elements that we chose to use for this were headgear, jewellery
& the goatskin capes. We have used faux fur as an alternative for
the goatskin cape. We chose workwear as our category of
clothing for this project inspired by YSL’s ‘Le Smoking’ tuxedo.
Inspirational moodboard to create the looks
Research & concept development
For the 1st look, we chose a maroon pant suit as
maroon is the core color in Drokpa mens garment .
I suggested we pair the long fur cape as a scarf.
The location was chosen by me as I felt the colors
of the jute ropes gave a very earthy feel & were also
cohesive with our color palette. The neckpieces &
the jewellery on her head was sourced by me. Hair &
Makeup as well as post production was done by me.For the 2nd look, a blazer dress and a fur cape
that were made by me were paired together. I have
made the blazer dress using a cotton khadi fabric
which is as thick as a wool fabric. We have paired a
mini wool scarf from the Indian brand ‘Pero’.
Using the fringed neckpiece as a headgear was my
suggestion. It was paired with a traditional Arunachali
headband.
Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-
Laurent, professionally known as Yves
Saint-Laurent, was a French fashion
designer who, in 1961, founded his eponymous fashion label.
“The most consistently celebrated and
influential designer of the past
twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent
can be credited with both spurring the
couture’s rise from its 1960s ashes and
with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable.”
He is also credited with having introduced
the tuxedo suit for women and was known
for his use of non-European cultural
references, and non-white models.
Yves Saint Laurent SAS, also known as
Saint Laurent, is a French luxury fashion
house founded by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Berg?.
The company revived its haute couture
collection in 2015 under former Creative
Director Hedi Slimane. In April 2016,
Anthony Vaccarello was appointed as the Creative Director. A YSL woman is someone who is
confident, strong, sexy & not afraid
to stand out. She has a love for high
end, luxury items.
The ideal consumer would be someone
who is a socialite and who lives in an
urban setting where it is seen as
‘appropriate’ to wear extravagant and
fabulous outfits. They would have a love
for travelling and the French culture.
They definitely dress to impress & have
high career ambitions, social status & a confident self image.
They would like to be seen as bold &
quirky, as YSL’s outfits are very loud
and demand to be seen.
All of this is basically Carrie Bradshaw
which is why I have chosen her as the client for this project.

Research & Range Development
Carrie Bradshaw (fictional) is a Columnist turned Socialite, Author,
Producer. She writes a weekly column called “Sex and the City” for
fictional newspaper, The New York Star. The column focuses on
Carrie’s sexual escapades and those of her close friends, as well as
musings about the relationships between men and women, dating, and
New York. It provides Carrie with a certain amount of recognition in the city.
People who read her column occasionally describe her as their icon.
She is truly a self-made women of her generation. As she continues to
be an icon, she also focuses on her fashion and presenting her brand in a certain way.
She is associated with sexiness, humor & elegance because of her
column “Sex and the City. As women empowerment, justice to
minorities and more socio-political changes have gained more
awareness, Fashion has also changed to fit the environment. Power
dressing as a trend has resurfaced from the 1970s and can be seen in
every geographical market. Yves Saint Laurent is a brand that focusses
on their consumer feeling exotic and authoritative. This range has been
curated as Carrie’s ideal wardrobe as an entrepreneur and socialite.
The looks can be worn at fashion events, red carpets, meetings, parties, appearances and cameos due to the versatality of the silhouettes.

Fashion means more to her than
basic necessities.
Carrie writes a weekly column called
“Sex and the City” for fictional news –
paper, The New York Star, which
focuses on Carrie’s sexual escapades
and those of her close friends, as
well as relationships between men
and women, dating, and New York.
Friends and family is very important to
her. Loves her usual Sunday brunch
with her best friends.
Always on the lookout for shoes.
A good listener and shoulder to cry
on.
Client Profile
Carrie, along with her friends, is always seen making appearances at PR events, parties & red carpets as her career has
sky rocketed since the launch of her book ‘Sex and the city’. This calls for a need of variety of styles in her wardrobe. Although her wardrobe sees her share of unique fashion pieces, she is al
ways in need of more. The range has been created keeping in my mind Carrie’s opinions on fashion and her need
to always leave a mark. It is a mix of authority and scandal which is a gist of what YSL stands for.
