There is a famous saying that Canada has a constitution similar to that of the United
Kingdom. But contemporary Canadian politics has also been influenced greatly by the
United States: in particular, I’m thinking about the function associated with the judiciary
branch. Please explain how, over the past 50 years or so, the judiciary branch in Canada
evolved into something much closer to what one may observe in the United States than what
is going on in the United Kingdom?

Your answer must make +/- 1,000 words (Times New Roman, 12; double-spaced), excluding
the presentation page* and references**.
The goal is to mobilize the pedagogical material (at least three references from the compulsory
(or complementary) readings are required). You are also encouraged to cite at least one
reference other than these. All sources cited must be included in your bibliography***.
Essays will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
1) Clarity, accuracy, and coherence of the argumentation (75%)
2) Research effort (diversity, multiplicity, and relevance of the references) (15%)
3) Quality of English, referencing, and general presentation (10%).
* It is imperative to respect the “author-date” style of referencing standards. All the details
concerning this method are available in the document I have prepared for you (see on Nexus
→ Content → Essay #2 guidelines)
** Essays must have a title page including the following elements: your first and last name, the
question you have selected, the date, the name of the course, the first and last name of the
instructor.
*** Scientific references are credible sources. They have been published by an academic
publisher (established or university presses for books; peer-reviewed scientific journals for
scientific articles). Sometimes, though, it is relevant to mobilize references that come from
daily newspaper articles (e.g. The Winnipeg Free Press, The Star, Toronto Sun, The Globe and Mail,
etc.). In case of an op-ed, you should make sure that the author of the article is credible (status,
position); otherwise, you should make sure that it meets the standards for rigorous journalistic
work.
