Essay Two (3-4 pages)
Here is the name of the book Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers, ISBN-13/978-0812979329
1. Write an essay about just one of the women of Annawadi (e.g., Asha, Manju, Meena, Zehrunisa, Kehkashan, Fatima, etc.). In your discussion, consider the following sorts of questions: In this “undercity” on the periphery of enormous symbols of wealth and glamour, what kinds of opportunities are afforded women—from teenage girls like Meena to mothers like Asha? What sorts of prospects do you see for particular female characters and to what extent are they empowered or disempowered in this “new India”? How do these figures negotiate the challenges of this new economy along with related matters such as domesticity, marriage, culture, friendship, and education? Most likely you will not be able to address all of these questions in this short paper; however, you should certainly address some of these questions.
Your essay should also include a meaningful discussion of the nature of this “undercity” by drawing from the insights of Mike Davis in Planet of Slums (the assigned chapters). That is, you should utilize some key ideas from Davis as a “lens” in order to illuminate or comment on important aspects of the Annawadi setting. (If, in the end, you find this “lens” from Davis to be inadequate or limited vis-à-vis the particular dynamics of Annawadi, then you should certainly point this out in your discussion.) This section of the paper should be 1-2 paragraphs in length.

How do they deal with issues of self- worth/self-esteem and to what extent do they demonstrate growth/maturation throughout the narrative? What do their ambitions, professions, choices, and fates reveal about their prospects of mobility within the new economy of India? Most likely you will not be able to address all of these questions in this short paper; however, you should certainly address some of these questions.

Additional Notes about the Essay: Your essay should be organized around a central argument or thesis, and your ideas should be developed in coherent, substantive paragraphs. Be sure to provide ample textual evidence in support of your claims. Of course you are encouraged to draw from lecture notes, but stronger essays will do more than just rehearse the analysis presented in class.
All sources should be documented according to Modern Language Association documentation style. I will go over this in class, and you should always feel free to ask questions. The essay should be typed and double-spaced, with one-inch margins and in twelve-point font.
