Everyone enjoys movies in general but one of the parts from the film industry that got me particularly interested since I was a teenager were the short films. For those not familiar with the term, a short film is any original motion picture that is 40 minutes or less in total length including the credits, according to the Academy of Motion Pictures Art Society. They can be animations or films with real people/actors in which not only the story but the editing work harmonize together so that you can tell a story in a very short time. The stories portrayed here focus more on the narrative than in extravagant visual effect in comparison with full length films.
The idea that some good stories don’t need to be told in a full length film, just fascinated me. A great narrative can be told in short films sometimes even with not much dialog or no dialog at all. And even the narrative of the images doesn’t always have to be in continuity, a director can play around with them, giving more flexibility to the project. There are a variety of genres in the short films, there can be comedies or dramas. Lately I have even seen some directors exploring horror in them.
Many short films chose to have an overall message or moral that can be understood at the end of the story. Some other short films close on a comic ending. And some others with an emotional situation that make us think about what the director is telling us with the images. That is why sometimes it makes me feel that these stories are more relatable to people. But they are also a good platform for new artists to show their art, from screen writing to directing, passing editing and camera work and even make up effects. New actors can be spotted for their participation in the short film genre as well. I would love to explore it myself one day. Here is the link to one of those short stories that I enjoyed, I hope you too.
