Research topic: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in India
The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease accounts for high morbidity and mortality rates globally. WHO reports that over 65 million people have COPD all over the world. In 2005 about 3 million people died accounting for 5% of deaths around the world and it is expected to be position three amongst the major causes of deaths by 2030. Researching about the disease is very expensive even for high-income countries in terms of data collection. The situation is worse for middle and low-income countries as 90% of those diagnosed with OCPD die in these countries. India is, however, trying to deal with it by creating consensus guidelines to help in reducing burden, enable diagnosis and management of COPD.
What is the prevalence of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in India?
One of the challenges of managing COPD is that estimates of the prevalence of COPD in India are accurate. Studies on epidemiology have addressed its prevalence and the main issue is the methodology applied and definitions in diagnosis. Some studies also have invalidated questionnaires caused by the measurement of peak flows. One of the major risk factors for the development of COPD is smoking since India has the largest number of people using tobacco. Being exposed to biomass fuels such as wood is also a risk factor of COPD and in India use of these fuels is widely prevalent with statistics indicating that 70% of the population uses them in poorly ventilated houses.
What are the risk factors of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
Many people lack awareness about the diseases including systems and implications and therefore many do not take precaution measures and do not seek primary care when they have symptoms. Also even when people with symptoms visit hospitals there are many records of undiagnosed. Some of the methods of treatment for COPD are inhalation devices and those who use them are highly stigmatized, therefore people prefer being treated by local, faith, and alternative medicine practitioners who use harmful and toxic treatments and even steroids.
What is the rate of awareness about Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
