The DECIDE model is developed to help health care managers in making more quality decisions, which ultimately determines the success of organizations. The DECIDE model is intended as a resource for health care managers when applying the crucial components of decision making, and it enables managers to improve their decision-making skills, which leads to more effective decisions.(Guo, 2020).
D-define the problem; a hospice patient of mine was at the end of their life and on end of life care. They were in extreme pain, but the family didn’t want them to be “doped” up.
E-establish the criteria; assess the pain level of the patient and why the family doesn’t want to give them any meds.
C-consider all the alternative; try non-pharmalogical methods first if that’s what the family wants, Another option is to sit down and talk with them and explain to them that giving them the meds will not make them doped up.
I-identify the best alternative; identify the best alternative based on what the family wants.
D-Develop and implement a plan of action; take that alternative that they chose and develop the best plan of action to implement it wether that be things like essential oil or massage therapy or give them the medications.
E-Evaluate and monitor the solution and feedback when needed; evalute the outcome and see if further steps need to be taken.
In my future practices as an RN I will use the decide model when it comes to the decision making process.
