Progress Report
Introduction
I have been doing my placement at the invoice office of Australia’s one of the largest supermarket chain Woolworths group Ltd. The type of my internship is accounting related as most of the tasks and activities I have been performing is related to company’s day to day general accounting activities.
I have been appointed as a Store Service Assistant at the invoice office of Woolworths casuarina and my role is to assist the Store services compliance officer with her various day to day activities.
The focus of this progress report is to shed light on to the company background, its core business activities, its national and international spread, various departments and department of my internship, reporting supervisor and company hierarchy, organization culture, working environment etc. Moreover, this report is aimed to reflect the applications of the academic knowledge as well the knowledge gained from the internship within 150 hours.
Company Background
Woolworths have first opened their door on Friday 5th of December 1924 and has been delivering its service for 95 years. Mr. Brad Banducci, is the CEO of the company and is responsible for all its strategic, managerial and operational activities. Woolworths Limited also named as “woolies” has got its formal name of Woolworths group limited on 2017.
Woolies mission is to convey the best in accommodation, worth and quality for their clients. they utilize 201,000 colleagues who serve more than 29 million clients over their brands each week. They are a believed colleague to many nearby ranchers and producers.
Woolies vision is to be one of the world’s most mindful retailers which mirrors the energetic promise to doing great business, for their clients, their kin and for the entire world.
Woolworths group limited is Australia’s one of the largest supermarket chain with 981woolworths supermarket and 43 woolworth’s metro convenience stores (Annual report 2019). It specializes in groceries like vegetables, meat, fruit cereals and offer various household appliances, baby products, DVD’s, magazines etc. It’s headquarter is located at Bella vista, NSW Australia and has 1024 stores Australia.
The company operates retail stores under different names in various countries like New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa. It has approximately 205,000 employees with a yearly revenue of $1.7 billion in 2019 financial year (Annual report). Woolworths has other various affiliate brands for instance Big W, BWS, Dan Murphy’s Pty Ltd, Masters Home Improvement Australia Pty Ltd, Cellarmasters Pty Ltd, Caltex Woolworths Pty Ltd, FreshChoice Ltd, SuperValue Ltd, Statewide Independent Wholesalers Limited, Winemarket Pty Ltd, Witchery, Trenery, Mimco, Country Road, Politix etc.
In addition, Woolworth has a wide range product of its own brands which are categorized in six types like Essentials, Woolworths food range, Gold, Macro wholefoods market, Delicious nutritious and the Odd bunch.
All Woolworths Supermarket is divided into nine department such as Customer service, Fresh service, Bakery, Fresh convenience, Fruit and Veg, Non-trade, Grocery and Grocery Nightfill, Online.
Each department has its own concerned area for example Fruit and veg is responsible delivering fresh produce to the customers whereas customer service department ensures that customers have a good checkout experience.
Moreover, woolworths follows a liner hierarchical structure for all its departments. Exhibit 1.1 shows how the store is structured by maintaining upright working environment.

Department of internship
The department in which I am pursuing my internship is the Non-trade department of the store. This department of the store encompasses all the administrative accounting related activities of the store. This department directly reports to the store manager and is responsible for various essential activities which includes cash management, payroll, maintaining employee records, cost forecasting, keeping track of the hours each employee is doing, ensuring the legislations of labor law of the country and so on.
Exhibit 1.2 shows the hierarchy of this department with all the team members and supervisor of the department.

The Non-trade department is a small department comparing to other departments of the store. The SSCO is the manager of this department and reports directly to the store manager. At the Casuarina store Quazi Sharmin Laila is SSCO who reports to the store manager Durant Rinaldi. As I have been offered the internship as the Store services assistant my supervisor is Quazi and I report to her. The department has total of four team members who all report to Quazi and she only reports to the store manager.
The non-trade department is concerned with all the managerial administrative and accounting related activities of the store. This department manages all the payroll of all the employees of the store and forecasts wage cost every day.
