Outline
I am going to introdce the building Chapel of the Colonia Güell which is art Nouveau style and from the chapter one page 29.
Reason:
In our class, I learned a lot of various styles of architecture, but art Nouveau style is my favorite. In this style, I think Chapel of the Colonia Güell is very special and representative buildings. Because I think it is full of mystery, and the perfect combined nature element. This building can reflect the rich imagination of architects. A lot of people think architecture is a very rigorous and rigid topic, yet Gaudì uses this work to give everyone a new view of architecture.
Background:
Located in a manufacturing suburb in Santa Coloma de Cervelló where is near Barcelona of Spain.
The church is located on a hill, surrounded by pine forest
Why only the crypt-like lower nave had been completed at this point:
– He began to build this church in 1908
– But in 1914, after funding ran out, he was forced to stop and unfinished it
Features:
-“Gaudí’s work is often characterized by a kind of free association in which forms suggestive of animal, vegetal or geological formations appear.” (Colquhoun 30)
– irregular forms of trees or spiders’ webs
example
– only perceive one single flat surface: the roof of the crypt
reason
How to apply the art Nouveau style in this church:
The Art Nouveau style is mainly for against the decorative style of Vitoria or other styles, and it against strong industrialization style. It supports to set off the attention and enthusiasm for the traditional arts and crafts, but also give up the traditional decoration style and use natural elements in the decoration.
This work does not conform to the classical church design rules and style and is full of strong sculpture art performance.
