I chose Obesity as my topic. “HERE THE MOST NOTICEABLE SOCIAL DETERMINANT OF HEALTH WAS ‘FOOD AVAILABILITY, THEREFORE I WILL BE WRITING ABOUT OBESITY AS A POSSIBLE HEALTH OUTCOME. WHILE WALKING THROUGH BOTH AREAS I NOTICED THAT THE UPPER EAST HAD A LOT MORE RESTAURANTS THAN THE LOWER EAST SIDE. APART FROM THIS, THE FOOD OPTIONS IN THE LOWER EAST DID NOT LOOK SO HEALTHY, ALL THEY HAD WAS A PIZZA SHOP, A HALAL FOOD TRUCK, AND A DELI. THIS DIFFERS FROM THE UPPER EAST SIDE BECAUSE THERE I WAS ABLE TO SPOT A VARIATION OF HEALTHIER FOODS LIKE ASIAN CUISINES, MEXICAN, AND MORE

Small Area Analysis Project – Final Paper Structure

Section

What this section must include:

Introduction

1. Provide an
overview
(short summary) of your findings based on the assessment questions from the Community Toolbox (CTB) that you used for your Walking Survey.

2.
State and discuss
a health issue/social determinant issue

(Compare the two community areas first, and then present one public health outcome that you will link to these structural differences—i.e., obesity, asthma, violence, malnutrition, substance addiction, hypertension, diabetes, etc.)

Literature Review

1. Discuss previous studies on your topic, including relevant assigned articles and other literature that you found when researching your selected topic (articles; studies; databases, etc.).

2. Clearly define your research question—>What is your selected health outcome, and what is the focus of your report?

3. Discuss what your study will contribute to the public health literature (Why it’s important).

Methods

1. Discuss your two sites and populations therein (you will need to look at census data for zip codes 10035 and 10028 for the East Harlem areas; or find the zip code for the different area you surveyed: http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml).

2. Describe your research methods and why they are appropriate to addressing your research question.

3. Discuss how you collected and analyzed your data.

Findings

Small Area Analysis

1. Give a basic
quantitative
analysis of your findings.

How did the
numbers
compare from one neighborhood to the other? (e.g. # of stores with fresh foods, # of fast food restaurants and alcohol outlets, pawn shops, tattoo parlors, hookah/vapor lounges, health services, religious center, etc.).

2. Give a basic
qualitative analysis of your findings – give a detailed
description
of the similarities and differences you saw in the items you assessed, and the overall characteristics of the two neighborhoods (condition, walkability, facilities, etc.).

Discussion &

Conclusion

What are your basic conclusions
? Do you think you did a fair job of assembling information and comparing the neighborhoods?

From the CTB Small Area Analysis page (http://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/assessment/assessing-community-needs-and-resources/small-area-analysis/main )

Discuss
: what worked well, what kind of information was most valuable, whether your understanding of causes and identification of trends were accurate, and whether the information you gathered was in fact instrumental in your being able to address the issues and disparities you were concerned with.
