My grandmother was a widowed woman who was strong, hard-working, wise, loving, and caring. She was not afraid to express her thoughts and was the type of woman that did not show love nor care through emotion, but through her actions as she cared for those she loved. She stood at the height of 5’6” with short teased grey hair and brown eyes. When I was a young boy, I was raised in my grandmother’s warming and welcoming household. Despite of being a widowed woman and working all day, she managed to raise me in a way that would have the best impact on my life.
Since,
I had lost my mother as a young boy, I looked to my grandmother to learn how to be strong. Like myself, my grandmother was raised in a Hispanic household in Willcox amongst her six siblings who did not have the presence of a father throughout their childhood. She shared that, “This was one of the hardest times I faced during my childhood because we struggled to survive with the little my mother made waiting tables.” The look within her brown eyes as she looked down and pressed her lips together was her way of holding back her emotions but expressed her sadness. My grandmother was a woman who always stood bold and was not the type to express her emotions. Instead, she expressed her emotions through her actions which showed her strength and humbleness. My grandmother did not want me to face the same struggles she did as a young child, so she took me into her household and raised me like I was one of her own. She strongly believed that family must stick together and help each other out in times of struggle which is a common belief in the Hispanic culture. Looking back, not only did she make a huge impact in my life, my grandmother also served in many influential roles, and her courageous demeanor always stood out to those around her.
In addition,
my hard-working grandmother taught me how to be a responsible, hard-working individual by teaching me to pursue my beliefs and passions. As a young boy, my grandmother instilled in me the importance of working hard to build a great credit score, buy a home, pursue a career, and further my education. These are the same beliefs that my grandmother was passionate about which helped her succeed at life. Not only would she emphasize the importance of these responsibilities, but I was also honored to observe how hard my grandmother worked as she lent a helping hand to her community while maintaining the household. Before serving her community, my grandmother made sure that I was taken care of first before starting her busy day. I remember my energetic grandmother waking up early every morning to make a delicious breakfast before taking my sister and I to school. One of the best memories is getting ready for school and I could smell my grandmother’s homemade pancakes from my bedroom cooking in the frying pan in the kitchen. After dropping my sister and I at school, my grandmother would take the time to clean the community church, work a full-time job, and have a yummy dinner ready every evening. My grandmother’s positive examples and lessons have taught me the true meaning of hard-work and responsibility. Furthermore, my grandmother also had a keen eye and wise outlook on life and was not afraid to share with me her thoughts and recommendations.
Without a doubt,
my grandmother was a very wise woman who shared her wisdom and knowledge to me as a young boy. Simply, my grandmother understood the meaning of life and would share her life experiences with me. As a silly young boy, I would joke around with my grandmother. With her humorous personality, she would respond with, “Don’t talk something of stupidity; if you want to talk to me talk something of intelligence.” Even though my grandmother was a petite woman, she always stood tall with confidence and a glow to her eyes, dressed in her black slacks, a nice blouse and a wool woven coat that would complement her nicely permed, grey hair and soft, rosy cheeks. I would just stare at my grandmother in awe and not understand what she meant by her response. However, I knew that she was telling me for a reason and offering me that advice to guide me in my life.
Furthermore,
whenever I needed support and guidance, my grandmother’s loving and caring personality was contagious. My grandmother served as a mother figure in my life by providing her love and care in the most genuine way. She was the type to not show love through hugs and kisses but by doing the most meaningful things for me. As an example, she would always help me purchase my sporting equipment for wrestling and made sure I had my clothes washed and folded in my drawers. My grandmother’s two tiny hands were empowered to do so much and amazingly, she would never give up or get tired. She would do everything with a bright smile on her face that could light up any room.
Lastly
, my grandmother was passionate about helping others in the community and always lent a hand with a positive attitude. Through all the adversity my grandmother faced, her heart was the size of a galaxy, and it only grew fuller with love and happiness. In the small community of Willcox, my grandmother was always known for her helpfulness and kindness. She would always say, “Always be there to give a helping hand, but do not do so expecting a favor it in return.” This was a quote she lived would often repeat to me as a reminder that you do something out of the kindness of your heart to help those in need. To this day that is a golden rule that I live by as I help those in need of a lending hand or to teach them knowledge, I have in home repair. I do so to not expect anything in return, but in hopes that they seek to help others in need or that when I need a lending hand that someone will be there to help me.
All in all, my widowed grandmother simply left a profound impact in my life by being the strong, hardworking, wise, loving, and caring woman she was. If it wasn’t for her being this role model in my life when I was a young boy, I would not be the strong person I am today. I will always cherish and carry my grandmother’s valuable lessons with me. One of her sayings as I would sit and share what I wanted to achieve in my life was “I don’t know if I will be alive to see it, but we will see if it will be that way.” With my grandmother’s death 8 years ago, I replay her saying often and picture her side smile to challenge myself to accomplish my goals. It is that very saying that has taught me the meaning of “Grandmothers are voices of the past and role models of the present. Grandmothers open the doors to the future”. – Helen Ketchum
