negatively. You could decide that a current law needs to be removed or modified or that a
new law needs to be written/added to protect and help this group.
Keep in mind, your completed flyer is meant to inspire and involve other human and social
services professionals in your efforts and to inform them about the methods they could use to
effect social change for this group. Your completed flyer will:
• Identify a vulnerable group
• Detail a law that could be changed, added, or removed to protect or help your selected

• Remind human and social services professionals of their ethical obligations when it
comes to advocacy

Week 7: Creation of Flyer and Final Submission to ePortfolio
•
Due by the end of Week 7 at 11:59 pm, ET.
This week you will apply the knowledge gained from class and the previous pieces of your
Portfolio Project to create a flyer. The purpose of this flyer is to inform other human and social
services professionals about your selected group and the law you would like to see removed,
modified, or added. As you are working on your flyer, remember what you have learned
about constituency building. Demonstrate those skills in what you write and the formatting of
your finished flyer. You want your flyer to inspire others to join your cause.
As you construct your flyer, make sure to include APA style citations and a reference list for
the scholarly sources utilized in Weeks 2 and 4 (and any others). Your flyer should contain
mostly bullet points to succinctly convey information, rather than using full paragraphs.
Use your flyer to:
• Identify the group you selected as the focus of your project. Explain why this group
was selected.
• Summarize the law that you believe needs to be modified, removed, and/or added in
order to help this group. Justify how modifying, removing, and/or adding a law would
benefit your selected group.
• Describe how each of the following methods could be used to advocate to change your
selected law and impact the group that you chose. In so doing, note any important
pros/cons of the method. If possible, offer tips for overcoming any cons.
o Community organizing and development

o Lobbying
• Remind your fellow professionals how the ethical standards outlined by the National
Organization for Human Services/Council for Standards in Human Services Education
apply to social advocacy.

o Remember, you are trying to persuade people to join you in your advocacy
efforts. It is an ethical obligation of the field.
To create your flyer, follow these steps:
1. Go to the Piktochart website, using the following weblink: Piktochart
2. Click on “sign up” in the top right corner or “start for free” towards the center of the
screen.
3. You can then create a free account with your email address, Facebook profile, or Google
account. You can choose whichever of these options you are most comfortable with.
4. Once your account is set up, you can access and utilize available templates for creating
flyers. Pick the template that you find most appealing and eye-catching.
o After your account is set up, you can access the available flyer templates using
the following weblink: Flyer Templates
o In the flyer template section, you will also see templates for creating brochures.
This is another good option for your finished project. Select whatever
template/format you think is best to convey your information and persuade
others to join the cause.
5. As you use your selected template, you will be able to type into and edit existing
textboxes and images and add new images and textboxes as you need.
6. When your flyer is complete, click “download” towards the top right of the screen. This
will allow you to save a PNG file which you can then upload to ePortfolio for grading.
7. Towards the top right/center of the screen you will also see the option to save your
flyer. If you ever need to return to continue working on a flyer you started and saved
previously you can use the following weblink when logged into Piktochart: Piktochart
Dashboard
8. As you work on your flyer, you will see an option for getting help towards the bottom
right of the screen and a tour option towards the bottom left. Both of these links will
answer many of the questions you might have as you create your flyer.
If you are not comfortable using Piktochart or making an account, then you can use Microsoft
Word to create your flyer. Microsoft Word offers flyer templates that you can modify and edit.
If you use Word, you can play around with the paper size (in the Layout tab in Word) to
include more information, as you might do if you created/printed a larger sized flyer to hang
at work.
Make sure your flyer is easy to read and understand. It must address all of the
questions/prompts above. You should strategically use bullets, images, different font types,
sizes, and colors, etc. to help you to make your points more clearly.
HUSS450 – Portfolio Project

When you are done, upload your completed Portfolio Project flyer to the Program Outcome in
your ePortfolio listed below. Use the following naming convention: HUSS450 – Portfolio
