A huge impact on us as a society and it is important to understand how they are created. A successful movement is a group of people or an idea coming together to make a change with a difference. The difference is a successful movement study other movements’ failures and learn from their mistakes, rather than creating their own. In Charles Duhigg’s article “From Civil Rights to Megachurches”, he states, “social habits are why some initiatives become world-changing movements, while others fail to ignite”.
The anti-bullying movement has created new social habits from the influence of celebrities and creation of school events which has allowed this movement to strive and not fail.
Within the past decade, the anti-bullying movement has grown and become more successful by people following new laws and social habits. The anti-bullying movement was created in Sweden in the 1980s by Heinz Leyman. While doing research on Heinz Leyman I have found out that he started the movement based on a workplace bullying he observed.
Throughout the years he worked with other colleagues to create the movement. With the help and influence from others, new habits were created and eventually laws were made.
Within a successful movement, comes a great leader. In this case, Leyman saw an incident that happened at his work and decided to make a change. A great leader learns from their own mistakes instead of making excuses from others. As a leader they need to be able to motivate, create confidence, and provide support to people.
A leader does not have to be one person it can be a combination of like-minded people. A successful movement has leaders that are able to pass their leadership skills to others and spread their ideas. Leaders are usually thought to be born leaders and not made, but I believe anyone can be a successful leader.
In addition to this, great leaders do not need to be famous, most leaders are ordinally people, but they all usually have a huge influence and impact on their neighborhood or society. In Charles Duhigg “From Civil Rights to Megachurches” he talks about “strong and weak ties”. Large influencers in society have a better chance of peer pressuring people into joining their movement based on who they are and what they stand for. In today’s society, famous celebrities all around the world talk and push anti-bullying. With their great influence from their followers, this movement is now able to grow larger and become more successful.
