Essay III (Chapters 6-8)
This exam has one question: How did America change in the Revolutionary Era (Chapters 6-8)?
Follow this checklist to do a great essay:
__ Write an essay of about eight paragraphs (about three pages, double spaced).
__ Develop a main point related to changes in America. For example, you might discuss how the nation changed economically and politically, or how certain groups gained or lost power.
__ Show how America changed during the whole time period. (You could tell it like a story. If you like, you could show what a person would experience living through this time period.)
__ Use material from The American Promise, Chapters 6-8. You may also use material from from Connecting California if you find it relevant to the points you want to make.
__ Use 6-8 key terms or questions from the reading handouts to develop your main points. Put each key term (or key words from a question) in bold the first time you discuss it. Please make sure you use at least two key items from each of the three chapters.
__When you discuss a key term or question, be sure to explain how the person, place, event, or concept is important to the main points you are developing in the essay.
__ Include at least four pictures and explain how the pictures help us understand key points. Integrate the pictures with the writing so they reinforce concepts and events you discuss.
__ Write in short to medium-sized paragraphs.
__ In your first paragraph, give an overview of the kinds of changes you will discuss.
__ In your last paragraph, note how the country we live in today was shaped by the changes discussed. You might also note how the history helps us understand ourselves or our world.
