KELLIE’S POST:
Based on the information in the article, I think that all ten truths are important for leaders to understand. If I had to narrow it down to what is most important to me as a leader, the two that stand out are: nobody will find you as interesting as you do, and great leaders insist on excellent, pristine communication. Leaders who seek to understand their employees regarding who they are as a person shows that they care and are invested in them. Leaders who only focus on themselves and the work can put off a feeling that they may not care about their people which can lead to a lack of motivation. Leaders who insist on excellent and pristine communication show they understand their audience and can articulate a message effectively. In my current job, I provide coaching to my team consistently regarding clear concise communication. Specifically, when preparing content for senior leadership that will be presented. Data must be focused, and unnecessary details are removed to alleviate potential confusion.
Leaders must control their emotions because they are always being watched or judged (Adams, 2012). Having composure in times of crisis shows that they have the emotional intelligence to lead through anything which can lead to increased trust and motivation. For leaders, emotional intelligence is important in promoting a positive environment in the organization that encourages high achievement, innovation, and happiness among its employees (Garza & Salcedo, 2021). To help control emotions, leaders must learn to respond rather than react. This is something I learned early in my career as a leader. It is natural for people to react emotionally to a situation that can be dangerous when everyone is looking at you in a leadership role. Taking a moment to process the information, remove the emotion, and respond based on the facts is a more effective approach. Another important thing leaders should be mindful of is to focus on what they can control. It is not healthy to focus on things out of one’s control and can waste energy leading to frustration and stress.
I do not believe it is appropriate to give up on a goal and am aligned with the ninth truth which states that great leaders know what they want and go after it. Goals are what motivate us to achieve, accomplish, and succeed. Giving up shows a lack of confidence, motivation, and drive. For example, I have a goal of promoting a new role within the next year. I have a strong development plan I put together and have key milestones I am working toward to increase my leadership competencies which will help in my career growth to get to the next level. I would not give up on this as I would feel like a failure. The only time I think it would be appropriate to give up on a goal would be if external forces came into play such as illness, loss, relocation, or anything outside of one’s control.

CANDACE’S POST:
Based on the information in the article, which of the 10 truths do you think are the most important for leaders to understand, and why?
Truth #4 Every single person, even the greatest leader out there, is afraid but they act anyway. A person cannot become a great anything if they stop at fear. This is one of the most important tough truths not only in leadership but in life.
Emotional intelligence has become an important topic in leadership. The fifth truth in this Forbes article deals with emotions. What can leaders do to help control emotions?
Adams quoted Maloney clearly about leaders (2012), “They are always being watched by someone, which is why it’s important to have a small group of trusted friends and family, to whom you can vent” (para. 8).
It is having a safe place to let off steam. It is having people you trust that give you the space to be real so you (and maybe them as well) can problem solve.
According to the ninth truth in the article, leaders should be relentless in their pursuit of goals. Is it ever appropriate to give up on a goal? Give an example and explain why it is or is not appropriate to give up on achieving a goal.
Yes, I think there are times when goals need to be abandoned. In business, markets can change quickly. We have seen this with the last two plus years of COVID-19. Leaders had to pivot quickly, be willing to change goals to meet new situations. Every business had to pivot with the pandemic. I now work from home due to the pandemic. Restaurants had to change the way they serve food and adjust their dinning rooms to outdoors only. They still must do this when COVID numbers rise. Wise leaders must be willing to accept change and make new goals to meet new challenges.

XIOMARA’S POST:
Leadership Trait Questionnaire: Discipline-Specific Skills
Leadership has evolved immensely over the past decade. While some aspects of managing changed drastically, planning for future success and making difficult decisions remains a constant yet challenging chunk of a leader’s everyday life. Being an effective leader can be immensely stressful. After all, the future of an entire organization relies on your ability to lead. Failure to effectively lead can lead to disastrous effects on a company’s future.
Leadership strengths, qualities, and characteristics help promote a leader’s success. The result from the Leadership Trait Questionnaire indicates that my strengths are my diligence in my work assignment and dependable in my work performance. These traits demonstrate my total commitment to my work and any task assigned. In the past and whenever needed, I had always stayed late, began my career before others did, and made myself available to support others in need. My commitment to my job has allowed me to go above and beyond when needed, consistently delivering projects on time. The department I work in has deadlines during the end of the month, and it requires everyone to support the invoicing and contract review. As a data integrity processer, my role requires that I work till midnight to ensure the job is completed. I have put my job before my personal life, and at times, this is also my greatest weakness. Because I am so determined to succeed, I lose sight of the essential things and put them on hold. My colleagues and coworkers consider this a strength because I have a strong work ethic. The tasks to perform must take priority during crunch time.
I have not offered empathy to my coworkers during crunch time in my current role. This can be a weakness. I am driven and sometimes excessively focused on improving monthly goals. Adding responsibilities to team members causes me to lose sight of the burden for these individuals and their personal lives. These additional responsibilities showed initiative and drive for my team because it impresses the senior leaders but causes stress to the team. A good leader can understand the problems that their team or employee faces and can assist with their problem and be empathetic. If the staff is scared to talk to a leader about any issues they are dealing with, this can be detrimental for the group. Lack of understanding can cause low morale in a team. My goal is to improve in this area.

ANSAR’S POST:
Looking at this questionnaire, made me realize that what some see as strength, others may see as a weakness. The views vary based on which part of your life these people are in, and what is important to them. Co-workers and bosses want someone they can depend on to be present and do their job correctly, whereas family wants you to have balance between work and home. Family wants you to have the capability to share those important memories with them.
My greatest strengths would be diligence and dependable, as I completely commit myself to my work. I am always willing to stay late, come in early, and be there for those that need help. I put my job before my personal life, and at times, this is also my greatest weakness. Because I am so determined to succeed, I lose sight of the things that are important, and put them on hold. My colleagues and coworkers consider this a strength because I have such a strong work ethic, and this can be rare in this day and age. My family considers this a weakness because I do not make time for myself, and must sacrifice time with them because my job takes priority.
In my pursuit of management, I focused on improving my sales, meeting my monthly goals and taking on additional responsibilities in order to learn more. These additional responsibilities showed initiative and drive and this impressed my managers. By showing my commitment to my position, and wanting to learn more in order to advance, this allowed me to receive a promotion once the position became available. Once in that position, I continue to learn and share my knowledge with my subordinates. I showed them how to improve their sales technique, learn the systems, and optimize their monthly goals. Personally, I asked for additional responsibilities and watched and learned the job of a manager. I would give up time off, always answer my phone, and be there when the job needed me. All of this meant I would give up time with my family, and time for my personal goals. I always stated “I’d have time to do that” until the day came when I realized I had given up seven years of my life. And now it may be too late for all the personal goals I had. I have missed holidays, funerals, and special moments with loved ones because my job has not allowed me the freedom or finances to take time off. On a personal level, I wish I could go back and somehow balance the two while trying to accomplish my goal.
