Introduction
Sediments are loose grains that may contain rock or mineral fragments. Everyday many sediments are created, transported and deposited due to Earth’s large oceans. They are many ways that these sediments can then be turned into rocks such as through the process of lithification and precipitation.
Weathering
They are 2 different types of weathering Mechanical and Chemical. Mechanical weathering is when crushing, cracking and physical break down of the rocks. Chemical weathering happens when the rock comes into contact with air or water and it alters the composition.
Making a Sedimentary Rock
To become a rock, the sediments must go through a process called lithification. Which has two processes, compaction and cementation. During compaction the grains are smashed together, particle dissolution causes the grains to become locked together like puzzle pieces.
Cementation involves precipitation of microscopic minerals which glues together the grains forming the rock.

THIS IS PART OF IT THAT MY TEAMMATE WORKED ON.
General Grading Rubric for the Geology Group Project:
Possible Points = 75 pts
Points Breakdown:
Group outline = 10 pts
Team Assessment Survey #1 = 5 pts
Group Paper = 50 pts
Team Assessment Survey #2 = 10 pts
Grading Rubric Breakdown:
Group Outline:
–
Does it contain all group member’s sections? (5pts)
Does it detail what information will be graph for each member’s section? (5pts)
Team Assessment Survey #1
–
This is completion based. Answer the questions (your group members will not see
your responses, but I use them to grade the final paper on team work). (5pts)
Group Paper:
–
–
–
–
Does the group paper have a cover page with all member’s names and ID numbers?
(5pts)
Each person is graded individually on their section of the paper, so is there a table of
contents (after the cover page) that lists the page number and subtopic of each
person’s contributions? (5pts)
Does your section of the paper contain a graph that you made? (10pts) This is not
cut/paste a graph from the internet, rather you need to create (or replicate) the
graph. Email me if you are unsure.
Does your section of the paper properly explain your subtopic? (10pts)
Does your section of the paper contain a figure or picture (this can be from an
outside source, you just need to be sure to cite it and include it in the reference
section). (5pts).
Does your section of the paper include cited sources? (it should.) (5pts)
Is there an introduction and conclusion paragraph for the group paper? Does the
paper have a well-developed flow? (5pts).
Is there a reference section? References should be in alphabetical order, and
include everyone’s references used in the paper. (5pts)
Team Assessment Survey #2
–
This is completion based. Answer the questions (your group members will not see
your responses, but I use them to grade the final paper on team work). (10pts)
GEOLOGY GROUP PROJECT INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES
1. Students will self-enroll into groups of 5 members
–
Use the Student Geology Project Groups tab within the Geology Project Content Area to select
your group. Each Group has an assigned geologic topic, so it is first come, first served with
group topics choices.
o Each group member will focus on a specific sub-topic and groups will need to
communicate about the structure on incorporating everyone’s portion into one final
group project report.
2. Each group member must write a report describing their portion of the group project.
Each group member needs to include within their portion of the report:
– One page summary of written information about your portion of the group project.
– Include one data table or graph that you make using data on the web. (included citation)
– One picture, graph or figure related to the information in your section (included citation)
– References included within the end of the project report for all information researched within
your section of the group project report
– Students will submit typed report, done in a professional manner (including a cover page,
reference section, etc.) on ecampus.
3. Final Group Project Should Include:
–
–
–
A cover page with the Report Title, Group member names and a picture that represent the
group report topic.
A table of contents page detailing what page number each group member’s topics begin and the
name of who wrote those sections.
A professional style group report – make it flow and look professional.
o New Times Roman 12 pt font
o 1 inch margins
o Single spacing
A reference section that includes everyone references in alphabetical order, using the format of:
o Author last name, first. Year. Title. Source or web address accessed.
o Cite references within the report by using the format of:
▪ (Author last name, Year). Do this at the end of each sentence that uses that
source.
Each group member will submit the final group report on the Submit Your Final Report Here tab
DUE DATES OUTLINE:
– Enroll in a Geology Project Group on or before __October 8th__________.
– Submit your project section outline on or before __October 15th _________.
– Complete the group teamwork outline peer assessment #1 on or before
October 22nd.
– Submit your final group project report on or before December 3rd.
– Complete the group teamwork lab report peer assessment #2 on or before December 7th.
