What have you learned about yourself from leadership class and Immersion? From actual leadership class and in comparison, with my leadership immersion at a nursing care facility I learned that I am a self-starter. I helped a preceptor that was there for her first time with her med surg 1 clinical group. She was confused because she was not sure who she should speak to at the facility regarding her two students that were kicked off the dialysis floor unit. I saw the DON (Director of Nursing) informed her of what happened and then proceeded to introduce her to the prectoper and The DON told the preceptor that would not happen again and when her clinical group comes back next week, they will be allowed to shadow on the dialysis unit. The preceptor started to thank me because it was her first day there and she was confused as of who to speak too. So, I feel I was being democratic style and showing leadership.
What are your leadership and followership strengths and weaknesses? I think my leadership strengths are I am very organized and prepared, always on time, and my wiliness to learn and I feel I am very respectful with everyone I encounter done to the janitor, and I take accountability for my actions. My weakness would be I get impatient when projects run beyond the deadline, I focus too much on the detail and overthink and I have trouble saying NO.
What good or bad examples of nursing leadership have you witnessed? I follow a unit manager at a nursing care facility, and she oversees 25 patients that are on ventilators. So, it’s a vent unit. I had witnessed my preceptor (the unit manager) have one nurse speaking to her about results of patient, another management induvial on the other side asking about a patient and how they are eating, the secretary telling her there is pharmacy on the phone and she never faltered or yelled. She turned to each one individually and answered their questions calmly and with direct answers to their questions. I was witnessing all and think I probably would have yelled “Stop!” However, she handled it with such grace and poise and that made me really think what an amazing multi tasker she was and its obvious why she is the unit manager because she can handle the pressure and stress. I haven’t witnessed anything I think is bad however it has only been the first week for me at this facility.
What is your leadership plan or goal to improve? One of my goals I would like to set is becoming wound certified. The nurse manager I follow while we were having lunch let me know she was wound certified and she did it online. She informed me it an online course only a few hours and that would boost my resume. Also, when I begin my career, I would like to know what classes my job would be willing to pay for to advance my nursing education and last but defiantly not least my heart is set to apply to Family Nurse Practioner school.
Make the goals measurable, obtainable, and detailed so that you know how to follow through and you know when you have accomplished them! So, graduate this year from nursing school, take my NCLEX (hopefully pass) apply for a nursing job and get experience and then eventually apply to graduate school.
