Discuss SICP′s in the UK and proposal for change
OUTLINE OF PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE REPORT
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
In this section you should clearly identify what topic you will be focusing your assignment on
Keep it simple – consider focusing on one standard infection control precaution (such as PPE
use, or sharps management, or waste management)
Define the topic and reference this definition
As well as identifying the topic, give a rationale as to why you have chosen the topic
Is it a topic of concern in the area you work? If it is, briefly
explain why
Is it currently topical – such as PPE in the current pandemic environment?
Is it an area of infection prevention and control that particularly interests you? – if it is,
explain why
SECTION 2: APPROACH TO CRITIQUE OF
PRACTICE
In this section, you should explain how you plan to carry out your critique of practice
For example, do you plan to carry out an audit?
This is probably the most straightforward and recommended approach to critiquing
practice for this assignment. If you are conducting an audit – include the (completed) audit
tool in the appendix
Include within this section of your assignment a definition of an audit
Include in this section the benefits and drawbacks of audit – ensure you support any claims
you make with references
If you plan to critique practice by another method – please remember this is not an essay – you are
not being asked to write a literature review. Taking such an approach is likely to result in a fail
SECTION 3: FINDINGS FROM CRITIQUE OF PRACTICE
In this section you must refer to your completed assessment of practice (ie your audit tool for
example) – and appraise what you found.
What did you find was good practice? How do you know this is good practice – include
evidence to support your claim…
What did you find that was poor practice? How do you know this is poor practice – include
evidence to support your claim…
What kind of evidence can you use in this section to evidence good/poor practice?
you want to look for literature that shows how the actions you believe are good practice
help to reduce the risk of infection
you want to look for literature that shows how the activity you consider to be poor practice
may result in transmission of infection
For example, if the topic is hand hygiene: If the audit found staff were not washing their hands
between patients, I would note in my assignment this as poor practice, and make use of literature
which shows that failing to wash hands between patients can lead to infection passing from one
patient to the next. There is a lot of literature on this. Also, making reference to the chain of
infection demonstrates understanding of how infection is transmitted
THIS SECTION SHOULD BE A LARGE PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT – AND SHOULD SHOW YOUR ABILITY
TO USE LITERATURE TO MAKE AN ARGUMENT THAT DEFENDS YOUR CLAIMS OF GOOD/POOR
PRACTICE
REMEMBER – this is about the practice you see every day in your area of work – this must be the
focus.
SECTION 4: RECOMMENDATIONS – PROPOSED CHANGES TO PRACTICE
Any proposal for change should help to address the poor practice you have highlighted in the
previous section of this assignment
Consider what actions could be taken to improve practice
Education?
Training?
Use of posters as prompts?
Re-design of the working area
Introduction of policy/procedures?
Regular audit of practice ?
Other activity – what else could you do to improve practice?
Even if you do not find any poor practice – there is always scope to improve practice…so what
activities might you engage in to make practice even more positive?
SECTION 5 CONCLUSION
This section should be brief – it should simply summarise the above sections – what was the topic –
what did you find broadly – what recommendations do you make / what could be done to improve
practice (make sure you include references here too – every section should be evidence based)
REFERENCES
Be sure to follow UWS guidance on referencing – see library section in the module
Be sure to reference all text
Be sure that your reference list includes all in-text references
APPENDICES
As a minimum, include a copy of the tool used to assess/critique practice – this tool should
be completed to show your findings
If you do not have any appendices, something is wrong – and you have not correctly
(structured/ systematically) assessed practice. REVISIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT IF THIS IS THE
CASE
