Cultural Context Paper
This assignment is worth 10% of your final average
Aphrodite of Melos (Venus de Milo).
Write a 3 page typed paper in which you place this work in its cultural context.
First give a vivid, detailed description of the work of art. Next, describe the ideas about art and philosophy (especially humanism and ideal forms) of the culture that produced it. Finally, bring the two together. Explain the way that the details of the work of art relate to ancient Greek culture. What did they think of as the function of this work of art? How does the subject and the way it is depicted relate to humanism?
Each portion of the paper should be of equal length.
This should be 3 full pages at a minimum
– if the paper is two page and ¾ of the second page, you will lose points. Play it safe, write a few sentences or more into a fourth page. This should also be 12 point font, with normal margins, and double spaced. Also include a cover sheet with your name, the class number, and the title of the artwork on it.
You need to go to the library or look online for at least 2 sources. These should be cited MLA style in a bibliography page. Do not directly quote from your sources, and do not plagiarize – everything in this paper must be in your own words.
