closing the gap in health disparities
Closing the Gap in Health Disparities – Presentation
In this assignment you will research the health disparities of a selected population group of your choosing and develop a cultural competency model designed to train staff to increase access and health care outcomes within the community they serve. The real-world deliverable for this assignment will be a PowerPoint presentation that could be delivered at a public health conference.
Consider the following scenario to help set the stage for this presentation. You may use your own organization as the model or any other organization that aligns with this scenario.
The Scenario
You and members of your organization have been asked to give a presentation at your state’s annual public health conference. Your agency serves a diverse population and has developed a cultural competency model for staff that has shown increased access and health care outcomes within the community.
Assignment Preparation
The information you will need to gather for this assignment is similar to the type of information you found when completing the assignments in Units 3 and 5. Once you have selected the population group to study, you will need to do the following:
· Collect the demographic data of your selected population group.
· Assess their health care needs.
· Locate examples of best practices that have successfully been used to reduce health disparities in similar populations.
· Create a cultural competency model that consists of the knowledge, skills and attitudes staff from the scenario could incorporate in to their health care practices.
Use the Capella library and the Internet to find additional articles and Web sites so that you can compare and contrast cultural competency practices from around the world. The goal of this additional research is to identify similarities and differences in approaches that have successfully closed gaps in disparities faced by the population group you are studying.
Assignment Instructions
Develop a PowerPoint presentation designed to be presented at a public health conference that provides an overview of your analysis of the health disparities in a specific population along with a suggested model for improving cultural competency in health care organizations serving that population group:
· Identify the populations served.
· Consider the definition of population groups as described in Unit 1.
· Provide background information on the populations).
· Include data provided in the Population Demographics Fact Sheet, similar to the one you developed in Unit 3.
· Outline health behaviors/implications that are significant for the populations.
· Build upon the information from a Health Care Needs Assessment, similar to the needs assessment you created in Unit 5.
· Provide an overview of a cultural competency model developed for training staff.
· It should be clear how the model directly relates to lessening health disparities based on social factors that are specific to the identified population. Your model should highlight the key knowledge, skills and attitudes health care staff in your organization are integrating in to their health care practices.
· Provide general recommendations for other organizations about improving their organization’s cultural competency.
· Draw examples from organizations that have collaborated across international boundaries to improve practices for similar populations.
· Include suggestions for increasing inter-professional communications with other members of the community who serve this population.
Additional Requirements
There should be 10 to 15 slides, and the speaker notes should be utilized for each slide. The notes should be 100 to 150 words per slide.
