You have been given a research proposal by Birmingham Airport to investigate the growing demand for touchless travel and identify the key criteria that constitute a contactless passenger experience within airports. You are required to complete your assigned task using the format for a research project: • Rationale – explanation of why you are doing the research and who will benefit from it • Methodology – explanation of the secondary research methods used to collect relevant information and how you will review the collected information • Literature Review – definition analysis of passenger experience and how and where touchless technology can be used within airports to enhance the passenger experience • Conclusion – present the key criteria (from your literature Review) of what constitutes a contactless passenger experience within the context of airports • References – reference list

How to Write your Research Proposal
Guide
Guidance on how to write your
Research Proposal
Aim and Objectives of your Research Proposal
The Aim and Objectives for Assignment One (CW) and Assignment Two (PX) are provided
below for your reference.
Please note for Assignment One (CW), you only need to discuss the first three objectives
which will feature in your literature review. The final three objectives refer to Assignment
Two (PX).
Aim-
Investigate the growing demand for touchless travel and identify the key criteria that
constitutes a contactless passenger experience within airports
Objectives
• Define the term passenger experience with the context of airports
• Examine the different contact points of airports where touchless travel can be
used to enhance the passenger experience of airports
• Identify the key criteria that constitutes a contactless passenger experience within
the context of airports
• Conduct an audit of three international airports from different geographical
regions including Birmingham Airport comparing and contrasting their response to
touchless travel
• Complete a SWOT Analysis of Birmingham Airport in relation to touchless travel
• Propose recommendations and strategies on how Birmingham Airport can
enhance the passenger experience using touchless travel
Literature Review Suggested word count – (1,000 – 1,250 words)
A literature review provides an overview of the literature covering a research topic
comparing and contrasting the issues and themes in order to provide a summary of what
has been written previously.
Within this section of your research project, you are answering objectives 1-3.
Objective 1- Define the term passenger experience with the context of airports
Guidance – Provide 3-4 different definitions for passenger experience from up to date
academic sources. Compare and contrast the different definitions to form your own
working definition for passenger experience.
Objective 2- Examine the different contact points of airports where touchless travel can
be used to enhance the passenger experience of airports
Guidance – Based on your research, identify the different contact points of airports where
touchless travel is needed to enhance the passenger experience of airports. Their maybe
contact points within airports where touchless travel is needed more than others. Use
examples and references to show evidence of detailed research to support your analysis.
Objective 3- Identify the key criteria that constitutes a contactless passenger experience
within the context of airports
Guidance- Summarise the findings of your research from objective 1 and 2 to conclude
your literature review with the main ideas and themes that make up a contactless
passenger experience across within an airport.
Rationale Suggested word count – (500 words)
Your rationale should begin by summarizing the main activity proposed followed by an
explanation of why this proposal is merited and its benefits.
Identify with supporting evidence why Birmingham Airport wants to develop touch-free
operations.
Identify the key Stakeholders of Birmingham Airport and explain with supporting
evidence how developing touchless technology will benefit them.
An excellent rationale will include academic references which fully justify why you are
doing the research and who your research will benefit.
Read as much as you can so that you are able to select the most relevant sources that
help you to understand the issue and allow you to present your understanding of the
different objectives of the research project.
There is no ‘magic number’ for how many sources to cite, as this will depend on your
research area. You should however be interested in presenting quality over quantity
where possible.
Methodology Suggested word count – (750-1,00 words)
Your methodology is an explanation of how and why particular research methods are
being used and how data will be interpreted.
Like a science experiment where you test a hypothesis/theory, you need to explain-
✓ How you collected your data
✓ Why you used these particular research methods
✓ How you intend to use this information for further research
In simple terms, the methodology gives a clear understanding as to how you obtained
your data and justifies the methods you used for collecting data.
Within your methodology, you need to explain how research was collected for your
Literature Review and justify why you used these particular research methods and how
you intend to use this information for further research.
In order for your methodology to be clear and easy to understand, divide it into the
following sections below-
Design- What type of research did you use for your literature Review and why did
you use this type of research?
Refers to the type of research that you have used- Primary /Secondary Research &
Quantitative (numbers/statistical) Qualitative (words, content)
Construction -What different types of research did you use and how did you
access / collect this data?
How did you find research? Did you use any processes? Where did you find it? What were
your search terms?
Sample- What research was better than others & why do you think that? Did you
have some criteria to evaluate the research you collected?
Explain the filters that you have used to narrow down your research to ensure that any
data collected is representative and not biased
In relation to the secondary data you have collected and researched, it is important to
explain how you evaluated whether that data was relevant to your specific research
topic.
This is collectively known as your Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria- Example below-
Select Literature based on the following Evaluation Criteria (ACROS)
✓ Authority- is the author an expert on the topic and qualified to write on the topic?
Type of Literature
✓ Currency- is the information up to date? Date of Publication
✓ Relevance- is the literature related to your subject area?
✓ Objectivity- is the literature balanced or is it biased?
✓ Supporting Evidence- is there any evidence in the text to support the accuracy of
what is being said
The aim within this section is to show that the sources you used for your literature review
were chosen based on quality, validity, suitability and reliability.
Procedure What did you do with the research- how did you summarise and
organise it? Did you follow a process?
From the research collected for your literature review how did you organise and
summarise your findings?
Think about what you did- read data closely, highlighted key points, evaluated different
perspectives, identified representative quotations and common themes, used themes as
criteria for further research.
In this section, you will need to explain how you analysed the data you collected from
your literature review and how this filtered into the construction of your
audit/framework for further research.
Using the themes and headings from your literature review did you create an
audit/questionnaire/survey/interview to analyse your research subject in more depth.
Data Analysis – What do you plan do with all this research?
The process of inspecting, summarising and interpreting data to discover useful
information in order to suggest conclusions and make recommendations to support
decision making.
Explain how you intend to review the data from the research you have carried out to
identify potential enhancements and give strategies
An excellent methodology will include all 5 section with
detailed justification of choices with supporting
