HOW TO USE THIS WORKSHEET:
This worksheet is designed to help you with structuring and researching your project. On each page, use
the guide to help you identify answers to all seven required questions. There are also places to include
your citations and reference list items as you complete your research. Keep in mind that you need to also
review the Graded Project Outline for all information on submission requirements, formatting, and grading
rubric. This worksheet doesn’t need to be turned in and should serve only as a tool to help you in prepar-
ing your research for writing your essay.
**THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTION FOR THE FINAL PROJECT. THIS IS A TOOL TO HELP YOU IN
ORGANIZING YOUR RESEARCH.
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the Final Project to better assist you in
completing your project:
You’ll select 10 artists, one from each listed movement. You’ll then compose an essay answering the seven
required questions for each of your chosen artists. You should be able to cover the required information
in one paragraph per artist. Therefore, your essay will be at least 10 paragraphs, one on each artist, and
each paragraph will answer all seven questions listed on the project outline. If you would like, you may also
include an introduction at the beginning of the essay that introduces the general topic of Modern art and a
conclusion at the end that sums up the general information we covered. The introduction and conclusion
aren’t required.
In addition to updating and including the required citations and APA formatting, a common error students
make isn’t answering all of the required questions for each artist. Make sure to address each question,
including ones that might not be applicable for an artist. Some questions have multiple parts, and all parts
need to be addressed to receive full credit.
An example of providing complete information is question six. The question is:
O What challenges did the artist face that would have affected their work? Think analytically.
O What was happening in the world at the time the artist was active that would have impacted the
content of their artwork?
If you feel the artist did not face any significant challenges or changes in their life, you might state: This
artist faced no significant challenges during their lifetime (during their career, to date, etc.). However, you
should discuss world events that would have impacted the artists’ work based on the time they were most
active and the works of art you’re discussing.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to use reputable sources. Wikipedia isn’t considered a reputable source. If
you have questions about a source, please ask.
Another common misconception is that there’s a 1000-1200-word limit. This is a minimum, not a maximum.
Most students finish the assignment in around 2000 words.

APA FORMATTING:
It’s required that your project be written in APA format. This means it will have an APA formatted title page,
in-text citations, and a reference list in alphabetical order. If you don’t understand what APA formatting is,
please ask your instructor.
RESOURCES FOR APA FORMATTING:
As indicated, your title page, in-text citations, and the reference page are to be in APA format. Here are
links to both the Writer’s Block on the Penn Foster Library page and for the Perdue OWL:
http://pflibrary.pennfoster.edu/writersblockhomepage
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html
These are excellent resources for addressing how to format your paper into APA format. For each outside
source used in your essay, there should be a corresponding reference on your reference page. A good
rule of thumb is that if you haven’t cited a source in the body of your paper, it won’t be included on your
reference list. Only sources you cite as an in-text citation will be listed on the reference list.
Please remember that the reference page will be in APA format and organized alphabetically.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE USE OF QUOTES AND PARAPHRASED
MATERIAL:
QUOTES:
Only short quotations should be used for this project, and only one quote per artist should be used if it
absolutely supports the context of your research. This means that any text with more than 40 words should
be paraphrased into your own words and then cited according to APA formatting. To use a short quote
format, you’ll use a format similar to the following:
According to Instructor Anderson (2019), “Only short quotations should be used for this project, and only
one quote per artist should be used if it absolutely supports the context of your research” (para. 3).
Or
“Only short quotations should be used for this project, and only one quote per artist should be used if it
absolutely supports the context of your research” (Anderson, 2019, para. 3).
Paraphrasing:
If a quote supports one’s research, it can be used for the project; however, only one quote should be used
to support any one topic (Anderson, 2019).

O Keep in mind that each type of reference source has different entry requirements. Please refer to
the websites above to make sure you’re using the correct format for your sources.
O Note the questions on the worksheet with space to include citations and reference list items.
These are the questions that detail lesser-known facts about the artist or aren’t based on your
observation of their life and work.
