Urban Planning & Design
My dear supervisors,
I would like to propose the following plan to make the
Research Topic: Intertwining of Politico-Religious Structure and Urban Design, Planning and Use of Space; a comparative analysis case study of Iran and Turkey
Research Question: How do issues of politico-religious control in Iran impact urban design, planning and use of space: an analytical exploration modern-day Persia in comparison to Turkey?
The proposed topic allows me to take a critically understand the impact of politico-religious control in urban design, planning and use of space and compare Iran and Turkey over the past 50 years. The reason for choosing a period of 50 years is the 1979 revolution which is a milestone in the history of Iran and has revolutionized the country in all aspects. Therefore, it would be worth researching to find out how it has changed urban design, planning and use of space, a topic which has not been studied widely so far. The reason to choose Turkey is to enhance the research impartiality, because while the two countries share some cultural similarities, they are different in terms of politico-religious structure. Comment by Richard Tucker: We need to know a lot more about why you’ve chosen Iran and Turkey
The reason for conducting a case study is the possibility of an in-depth investigation of the chosen contexts and it also enables a holistic review of the topic. In addition, case studies capture a range of perspectives, as opposed to the single view of an individual which could be obtained with a survey response or interview. This gives the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the subject in hand and reduces the potential for any bias, by diluting the agenda of the context. case study enables access to a more detailed, un-biased understanding of the past/present situation of Iran and Turkey, and this places the research in a stronger position to confidently recommend practical solutions to challenges.
In order to enhance the validity and trustworthiness of the findings in my case study, I will implement and follow these steps; firstly, consistent measurement procedures will be employed for the proposed interpretations and evidence related to the inferences have been made will be evaluated. Secondly, triangulation as a way of ensuring credibility, conformability and transfer ability of the targeted research will be used. Finally, several parallel studies of the same nature will be used since the context is only for two countries and this can deteriorate generalizability. Comment by Richard Tucker: measurement of what? Comment by Richard Tucker: what evidence will you analyse? Comment by Richard Tucker: studies of what? And what is their nature?
The primary method of data collection for this dissertation is critical, in-depth and comprehensive review of the current literature. This include a compilation of substantive research of different previously published scholarly works pertaining to my own research topic. This method also involves methodological and theoretical contributions to the topic and improves the validity of the research. Comment by Richard Tucker: Only the current literature?
You will need to describe EXACTLY what you will be comparing. What are the:
books
Papers
Pollical proclamations
Policy documents
Drawings
Public spaces
