please reply to these two colleagues for a discussion. Just a brief reply. colleague #1: If I suddenly lost my smartphone I would not be devastated as I am sure some would. It would be a hassle because I would have a tough time getting a hold of some people because my phone is where I keep my contacts. I am currently semi-retired so I do not have a work schedule, just a school class schedule that I can access from my computer. Now if I were to lose that as well, I would be a bit stressed, because of the inability to do my school work for 72 hrs. would put me behind. I can imagine that those who grew up with the cell phone as a part of their lives would have a much harder time. I know my children who are 27 and 30 would have a very difficult time, my 27-year-old daughter goes to bed with her phone, I am not sure she would be able to breathe without it. My 30-year-old son is in IT, he simply would not go 72 hrs. without it, he would have a new phone within an hour of losing his phone. I know this because it has happened. He has 2-3 extra phones at any given time just for such occasions. People my age often joke about younger people and their addiction to their phones, but I have observed over the past few years that many of them would be in just as bad shape if they lost theirs. Just yesterday my friend Jerry who is 65 could not figure out a boating chart, because he has gotten so used to using his phone to plot where he is going on the boat. I think the longer we rely on these devices the more we become dependent. I think they are a great resource, but I would suggest everyone learn how to use non-digital means of doing some activities so that is that day comes, you are not left wanting. colleague #2: If I suddenly lost all service on my smartphone (and in general) for the next three days, I won′t the panic, but I will have a bit of trouble. First of all, I need service on my phone to receive my schedule from my boss. Secondly, I use the internet to do my university assignments and volunteer work. Thirdly, I need the internet to teach my ESL students. And finally, I keep in contact with one friend, constantly writing a story with her back and forth throughout the day. If I were to suddenly disappear, it would probably scare her, or make her think she did something wrong. I think it might depend on someone′s age group, but from the reasons I mentioned, it doesn′t depends on age group. It depends on occupation, and how you regularly use the internet. As much as I would love to take a break from the internet and technology for a few days, due to responsibilities at this time, I simply cannot. One day, I′ll strive for it, though!
