Thesis statement: Gang violence in America is predominately impacting our youth through all aspects of their lives from family, social media, school, to inside the walls of the correctional system which is causing an increase in juvenile-gang-related crime. The problem statement is how are gangs infiltrating into our youth’s family, school, social media, and within the correctional systems, and how key aspects of everyday life are an open opportunity for gang recruitment. The solution to fighting gang recruitment and lowering the number of youth involvement in gangs and gang violence is through education and awareness of gangs, alongside proactive and preventative actions and programs. During my research, I have found that there are several databases and sources that have helped me find factual and up-to-date information. Through these sources, I have found various websites also that have helped aid in my past research. Some examples of some helpful resources are listed below.
APUS Library
The APUS Library has helped me find scholarly articles on previous topics I have researched. With the APUS Library, I can edit my search down to exactly what I need such as relevancy, date of issues, etc. I can narrow my search down to articles published within the last five years which helps make sure my information is up to date and with the times of today’s culture. The APUS Library can be a bit challenging sometimes. It is hard to find information that is recent and up to date. It also completes a broad search of your topic. For instance, when I type on “Gangs,” it will bring up multiple articles on anything that has a relation to gangs, but if I type on “Juvenile relations to Gangs” or anything of that nature, I am unable to find useful information.
Google Scholar
Good Scholar has helped more than the APUS Library has in conducting research. Google Scholar allows me to pick the time frame of what I am searching for, the type of article I am searching for and also has more information on a broad topic. Through my search on Google Scholar, I have come across great websites to be utilized such as The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention which has information from Gang Prevention, Gangs in schools, and provided additional resources. I have also found
youth.gov
through Google Scholar and found youth resources through the CDC website.
FBI Website
The FBI website has a lot of great information relating to Gangs and Juveniles. The FBI website can also provide up-to-date statics on gang-related crime and juvenile delinquency to gangs. I mostly gather statics from the FBI website but there is additional information that could be found on their website.
Some helpful hints I have come across in past and present research is to keep an open mind when looking for information. Don’t be deterred from the title of an article because sometimes you can find information on a subject but just scanning through the information. I have found to be careful when looking on websites and to verify you can trust the information that is being provided. I always tend to stay with .gov websites and stay away from .com websites. Also, be open to changing your thesis along the way or your problem statement. Sometimes when conducting research, the information you sought after just isn’t there or there isn’t enough information. You may need to tweak your thesis or statement or even title a little to accommodate what is found during your research.
