Worksheet Guidelines
Use the following guidelines as a resource for completing the “Impact
Process Addictions Worksheet” assigned in Topics 2-7.
Disorder:
1. Physiological
impact:
Identify specific physiological effects of this addiction.
Include how the addiction affects the brain chemistry
and functioning. Be specific with regards to
neurochemistry. Identify how these effects relate to
behavioral symptoms. Discuss effects on other organs in
the body. Be sure to specify which effects are acute in
nature and which are chronic. Include how recovery from
this addiction may impact the physiological effects.
Lastly, discuss what interventions can assist in the
healing of these physiological effects and promote
recovery.
2. Psychological
impact:
Identify the specific psychological effects of this
addiction. Include emotional consequences and how
these relate to behavioral symptoms. Also include
cognitive effects and how cognitive effects relate to
behavioral symptoms. Elaborate on how these
psychological effects impact treatment readiness and
response to treatment. Include information regarding
interventions that can assist in helping with the
psychological impact of this addiction and promote
recovery. Include psychological effects on family
members and friends.
3. Appropriate
screening,

diagnosis
issues:
Identify how professionals can screen for this addiction
and how they can assess its severity. Include how they
can screen for the addiction when clients are presenting
for other issues as well as if they are primarily seeking
treatment for this addiction. Reference any evidence-

addition, reference DSM-5when appropriate.

Include both the spectrum of levels of care as well as
specific intervention strategies. Relate the DiClemente
and Prochaska’s stages of change to these interventions
and specify how these stages may impact treatment
strategy and level of care placement. Include expected
resistance and barriers to treatment success. Discuss
treatment goals of family members.

Define and discuss relapse as it relates to this addiction.
Include and reference evidence-based and best-practice
interventions to minimize relapse. Be specific in
describing behavioral, cognitive, emotional,
physiological, and spiritual issues relating to relapse and
relapse prevention. Identify strategies for clinicians to
respond to relapse.

Outline an aftercare plan for a client who has been
treated in a primary treatment program. Include
professional and community-based referrals. Include
plans and strategies to address family issues.
