Library Resources
Students often say about an online library: “I can’t find any
sources on my topic in the library.” “The library isn’t user
friendly.” “The library doesn’t have much information.” While
you are entitled to your opinion, these statements can be
disproven easily. If you are searching in the library and “get
stuck,” you can contact a librarian any time using the Ask a
Librarian (https://www.apus.edu/apus-library/about-
us/contact-us.html) feature. You can e-mail, text, chat,
have screen-sharing sessions, review an extensive list of
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), and ask for help with
undergraduate and graduate sources.
If you find yourself making statements like the ones

mentioned above, ask yourself these questions. Have you
spent enough time exploring and learning the library? Have
you asked for help?Though our librarians are readily
available and eager to help, be sure you have tried to find
the answer yourself before contacting a librarian. Don’t
spend so much time on a problem that you become
frustrated, but do spend enough time so that you learn how
to use the library. You will be proud if you figure out the
problem yourself. Also, you may have heard the theory that
the best way to learn a new city is to get lost driving around
in it. Get lost in the APUS library. You will find new routes to
knowledge that you never knew existed.
Writing@APUS
Under Writing@APUS, (https://www.apus.edu/apus-
library/resources-services/Writing/writing-center.html) you
will find loads of helpful information. Click on “The Basics.”
There are links to databases for many fields of study. Are
you interested in General Studies? There is a link for that.
Arts and Humanities? Business? Education? Health
Sciences? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math?
Security and Global Studies? There are databases for all of
the above. Use them.
Also notice these tabs under “The Basics”: Dictionaries;
Encyclopedias; Citation Managers (online tools that help you
keep track of resources and format citations); Research
Guides (by program/your intended degree); and Technology.
Under the Technology tab, you can download Office 365 for
FREE and also acquire training and help using the software if
needed.
If you keep scrolling down “The Basics” page, you will find
another important link: Library Tutorial Videos. There are

Researching in the Library

Researching in the Library
As described at the beginning of this section in the library, “The
Trefry Library subscribes to a large number of licensed
resources – like article databases, scholarly journals and eBook
collections, exclusively for AMU/APU students, faculty and staff.
These are resources that have been hand selected to support
college-level research for each degree program offered here at
American Public University System.” Furthermore (from the
same library page), “It is important to understand that
research requires time, practice, and patience. It is a process
of identifying and evaluating relevant resources. With time, you
will learn where to go to find the information that you need,
and the process will become less difficult.” Keep scrolling down
and you will find lots of “Before you get started” videos and
“Tutorials, Tools, and Tips.”
There is a great deal of information here. Do not become
frustrated. You do not have to understand every aspect of the
library by the end of this lesson, or ever for that matter. Keep
exploring and growing your library and research skills as you
continue your academic journey. Probably by now you are
understanding why a comment like “there isn’t much
information in our library” is not accurate. In spite of the
massive amount of information to which you were just
introduced, you will find something surprisingly simple.

Quick and Easy Research
You do not have to achieve the skill level of an online university
librarian or research professor to be able to conduct good
academic research yourself. When you write an essay that
requires research, such as our Ted Kennedy example, try this.
(Please do not do this instead of learning and practicing all that
we have covered above. This is a quick list that should go along
with the aforementioned material. Notice how simple it can be
to find a good source in our library.)
01
Go to the home page of the library. Using the
“Everything” search bar, type in Ted Kennedy.
(Many results will be displayed so, if you wish,
you can narrow them down them by typing in
more words into the search bar like Ted Kennedy
Civil Rights.)
02
At the left of the screen, click on peer-reviewed
journals. (Peer-reviewed means that the work
was evaluated, prior to publication, and
approved by subject-matter experts of that
particular field of study. This is an indication of a
scholarly publication. Other indicators of
scholarly work include formal language,
bibliography, original.research, quotes from
primary sources, etc.)
03
The following article was so easy to find. It was
on page one. (By the way, if you become
unhappy with your topic or research results,
simply change your topic.

Looking Ahead
In the next lesson, you will take the next writing step. You will
learn when, how, and why to incorporate your newly learned
information into your writing. You will learn about Modern
Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological
Association (APA), two of the most commonly used formatting
styles.

Where Does Research Start?
Some of you might be tempted to go to Google or Wikipedia for
information. For informal research, it might be fun to do that.
Maybe you want to know how long a certain celebrity was
married to another celebrity. Wikipedia is fine for that.
However, anyone can edit “wiki” sites, so some of the
information may not be completely accurate. Google is fun too,
though if you search a topic, you will probably find FAR too
many sources to try and sort through. (Example: Typing in Ted
Kennedy yields over seven hundred thousand results.)For
formal research, such as that needed for college-level essays,
there is a better way to find information.
APUS Library
Did you know that there is practically an infinite amount of
credible and scholarly information available at your fingertips,
in every APUS classroom? We have a wonderful current,
extensive, and staffed library. Go to the library tab in the
