Approach and Purpose Paragraph
Abortion in the United States and around the world has remained a controversial issue for a long time. it is important to understand the best way to handle and perceive the issue and it is for this reason that only latest, valid, and authentic sources has been targeted in this research in order to understand the legal, social, religious, and cultural perspectives of the issue. Since the US Supreme Court passed the Roe v. Wade case in 1973 and ruled that women had a right to decide whether to carry a pregnancy to full term or not, the issue of pro-choice and pro-life become a major concern. From the ruling, different states across United States made abortion legal some entirely and others partially for instance first and second trimester and illegal during the third trimester. Nevertheless, in the recent times, there are some states that are reviewing its abortion laws and demanding some changes to make the laws strict in favor of pro-life over pro-choice. The researches main goal is to understand why it is important to have the changes implemented in different American states and how the change would impact the society morally, legally, socially, and culturally. I have been successful in seeking for the sources since information is easily accessible and the good thing being that I do not have a plan of changing the strategies for the purpose of remaining focused to the goal.
Libal, A. (2021). Abortion Legislation. Encyclopedia of Sex and Sexuality: Understanding Biology, Psychology, and Culture [2 volumes], 14(2), 14.
This article focuses on listing and analyzing the various abortion legislations in American from the national to a state perspective. The author argues from the sex and sexuality perspective and reasons that led the American judiciary to partially legalize abortion. The article supports that abortion is important but only in some cases and this means that the federal government has been right all along to have special cases. The author highlights a series of cases where human life that is from the mother’s perspective have been threatened, risked, and even lost due to unhealthy pregnancy and hence such situations legally and socially warrants the need for an abortion. The article also supports the government argument that American people have a right to make decisions in regards to their lives on whether to have a child or not and hence should not be compelled to retain the pregnancy after getting pregnant in an unplanned manner.
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. (2018). The safety and quality of abortion care in the United States.
This source shares interesting insights from a national perspective on the safety and quality of abortion in the United States. According to the article, before legalizing abortion in the United States, there were massive illegal cases of abortion that led culprits to jail. The lives of women were in great danger because they could seek abortion services from quarks. From a medicine perspective, the article argues that the American government could not act ignorant being aware of the situation and the only ethical and professional thing to do is have a safe procedure that could be used to access the services legally.
The article supports the idea of American states granting a grace period during which a pregnant woman can make a decision of whether to go through abortion or push through with full pregnancy term. More so, it recommends the policies laid down in different American states for instance in some states where a teenager is involved, the parents must consent, in other states the pregnancy must be between first or second trimester, and in other states prove of medical condition or undesired to have the child. Such conditions have been said to promote discipline and sanity among citizens thereby eliminating the reasons for reckless acts of abortion.
Tasset, J., & Harris, L. H. (2018). Harm reduction for abortion in the United States. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 131(4), 621-624.
This article perceives the issue of abortion from the patient safety perspective. The author terms abortion as a surgery procedure that if not handled with care can permanently interfere with a woman’s reproductive system. An important message shared in this article is that legalizing abortion in the United State is a move that the federal government wanted to reduce the rate of harm. By having specific abortion clinics in different states created room for safe abortion procedures to take place that would ensure that even later in life, the woman and conceive and carry the pregnancy into full term. Using statistics on the number of women suffering as a result of deal gone sour; the author proofs it is the duty of the government to protect its citizen. Moreover, a sensitive issue is also raised that even in the case where couples are using contraceptives; the effectiveness is not 100% as some have gotten pregnant while under family planning program.
Stuard, G. (2020). The United States’ Creation of Undue Burden on Abortion: A Breakage of a Constitutional Right.
In this study, the main focus is in the human constitutional rights where it is stated that the partial legality of abortion in the United States has been a direct creation of undue burden on abortion. The article shares an important point of view against abortion legalization by claiming that the partial legalization has only opened doors that could not have been known by many that current makes use of it since it is readily available for them. For instance, the partial legality has created room for women to act reckless thereby ignoring taking precaution as they are aware there is a legal way to have the issue resolved. Additionally, there is the right of the unborn child that gets directly violated from the act of abortion. The act of legalizing abortion has only been said to favor women to apply a decision that favors them.
Rye, B. J., & Underhill, A. (2020). Pro-choice and pro-life are not enough: an investigation of abortion attitudes as a function of abortion prototypes. Sexuality & Culture, 24, 1829-1851.
The article is among the most interesting articles not because it is recent but because it compares the pro-choice and pro-life concepts which the article further clarifies as not being enough. In this article, the author engages different people and focuses on investigating abortion attitudes for the purpose of determining abortion prototypes. From the research, the article notes that many people have a negative attitude towards abortion as they feel it is an act that lowers the victim’s dignity and this is something that the society and the government should not allow or encourage. The article goes against the decision of the government on partial legalization on abortion by claiming that cultural values and norms should be upheld at all times and by so doing, the choices people would make would in favor of life and not against it.
Watts, M. G. (2020). Investigating Moral Underpinnings of Attitudes About Abortion (Doctoral dissertation, Appalachian State University).
In this article, the main focus is on the many negative consequences of abortion and why it is morally wrong for a government to grant permission on abortion to take place. The article shares important insights on why it is wrong to have abortion legalized and even offers a recommendation that it should be completely banned. The author shares reasons why those engaging in abortion should be arrested and charged in court in order to grant life a chance. Instead, the article claims that the government should have better way of making life better and easier in order to reduce fear and anxiety whenever a teenage girl or adult woman gets pregnant.
