The civil rights movement was an organized effort by Black Americans to end racial discrimination and gain equal rights under the law. Board of Education, a consolidation of five cases into one, is decided by the Supreme Court, effectively ending racial segregation in public schools. A major factor in the success of the movement was the strategy of protesting for equal rights without using violence. Led by King, millions of blacks took to the streets for peaceful protests as well as acts of civil disobedience and economic boycotts in what some leaders describe as America’s second civil war. Anderson writes, “Prompted by a curiosity about the period’s subtleties and complexities, teachers across the country are modifying their curricula and abandoning their textbooks to teach a more accurate history that commonly goes untold. The biggest failure of the Civil Rights Movement was in the related areas of poverty and economic discrimination. Despite the laws we got passed, there is still widespread discrimination in employment and housing. Businesses owned by people of color are still denied equal access to markets, financing, and capital.

This article stated some very important information on how to develop a different approach to teach the Civil Rights Movement. The article discusses how Jessica Dickens, a Native of the Magnolia State, changes her approach on how to teach historical people and events of the Civil Rights Movement. Dickens wanted to teach students the broader view, instead of only focusing on the narrow way. The article discusses how some teachers are straying away from the textbook versions of what happened in the past to a more accurate way of how things actually were. The article pointed out some great ways on how teachers could teach the events that occurred from the past. It discussed some of the materials that teachers could turn to when trying to paint a clearer picture to students. I enjoyed reading this article. I enjoyed reading it because it taught me some things to do in my classroom when teaching the Civil Rights Movement. With it being Black History Month, I’ve learned some ways that I can approach my students when teaching these great events from the past.
Thought- Provoking Question: Should teachers focus only on the textbook events when teaching the Civil Rights Movement or should they try to broaden the events that are found in the textbooks by using other sources?
